I love the tip on feeding the eggshells to the birds- I have been feeding mine to the chickens and to the worms in the vermicompost worm farm, but here's another important population that can benefit. I will pass this info on to my egg buying cust...

Thanks for the comment on the video and birthday wishes! The extra calcium is good for them year round but especially during egg laying time. You can feed them back to your golden comets as well. Thanks again.

I believe it was on the home page of the Native Plant Society, on a bar on the right.

I did hear that you're doing a presentation. Good for you!

It's amazing how all this spreads and grows.

Found the newsletter at home. The Compost Class date is 10 January. My trip to Florida is planned for 14 January but Mom is not well and her boyfriend is on Hospice care, so I may have to go down there sooner.
The Girls are really doing well and laying daily. Last Friday it was such a nice day I sat outside watching the chickens; Dusty was standing in the corral with a preoccupied look on her face and then laid an egg, wiggling her butt to get rid of it. It broke on contact with the ground and she started to eat the shell, the other chickens in hot pursuit. I quickly got rid of the remains as I don't want them eating their eggs, but I don't think they are because I'm getting 5 eggs a day. Yes, I've named them (Dusty, Red, Blotch, Slow, and NoName), so no chicken dinners in the works for now.
Hope your trip back home goes well.

What is involved in chicken sitting your girls? I would imagine that between us we can handle the job, but cannot speak for him. When I get home, give me a call to remind me that we are talking about this and what is involved and he and I can negotiate what we can do. d

Funny, I could access the Fall newsletter on line when it came out but now I only get the Summer edition at starmountnc.com. The hard copy is at home somewhere.
Sharing trips to Renfrow's would be good. Meantime, if they're open today, I'll stop in for laying mash and mix it with the starter/ growth. We had 5 eggs yesterday. I need to check under the henhouse in case they laid any there where one kept trying to squat last Sunday.
January would be good for Compost classes but I'll be out of town for a week in mid-January. Could Borys chicken sit my Girls? If not, I have a pet sitter for my cats; she looks after horses so I'll ask if she does chickens too.
Have a great holiday!

Happy Thanksgiving dhijana! What will you be eating in Spain? What do you think of adding a turkey to a flock next year? I'd like to grow my own turkey some day. I hear the rooster at Renfrow's Hardware pecked their turkey so he was shipped back to his fellow turkeys at the farm, or that's the story I was told; maybe he is dinner on Thursday? My Girls began laying last Friday, a week after Jeff added the nesting boxes, and we are so thrilled. Had scrambled eggs and bacon (Grateful Grower's) on Saturday morning. Those chickens are such a delight and they make me smile every day with their antics. No problems with the neighbors but my coop area is getting a little messy with my temporary weather proofing and pen annex. Maybe I'll tidy up this weekend. We're working on a chicken tractor (4' x 8') so The Girls can have fresh grazing. They regularly escape the annex and head straight for the finished compost heap rather than the grassy areas and dig with gusto. I need to get them on laying mash; days before they began to lay I bought TWO bags of starter/growth feed to last through Thanksgiving. What are your plans for a neighborhood composting class?

My husband told David at Renfrows about the woman (can't remember her name) who lost all her chicks to hawks and David said he has extra he needs to get rid of. Don't know what kind or how old they are. If she's interested, let me know

Cool. That will work for Sat. and Sun. Friday is going to be a bit of a challenge. I have to leave next Sun for Seattle. I'll be on the red eye that leaves Seattle Thursday night at 10:47. I'll be late for class on Friday as I have a stopover in Atlanta. Should be back in Charlotte around 8:45. Sandy Yakob, a master gardener that works with me, is also on the same flight and taking the class. Her husband is supposed to pick us up at the airport Fri. morning and get us to class. I may need some extra ginseng to keep me going that weekend!

Hi dhijana! I sure hope to make it to the training in September. Been a bit frenetic lately. Went back to work, my mom has been having a tough time of late with her health, so I have let go of a lot of stuff lately. Home this weekend and Miss Blue and I are tending the garden and trying to do little else! Do hope to make it to the tailgate in the morning and hope to see you there! - Lj

PS - heard from Joan and she sounds so excited about the chickens!!!
