A Three-fer

A short Down and Dirty tip on how to make your freezer more efficient, save energy and plan for natural disasters….all by doing one simple thing. And as we enter hurricane and tornado season, I think this tip is pretty timely as well.

Water!

After a long dry spell (pun intended), we’re back with a video about water. Of the four elements of a wildlife habitat: Food, water, shelter and places to raise young, I think water is the most important. EVERYTHING needs water and being creative in providing water for wildlife can lead to hours [...]

The Venture Crew in Matthews made and donated 36 bird houses to HAWK this weekend. There's going to be a write up in the Charlotte Observer this Sunday, 7/6, about the project, but I thought I would share a few of the pictures with everyone.

Fishing for Owls?

Two Matthews kids were fishing at Squirrel Lake Wildlife Habitat in Matthews when a barred owl who lives in the park decided to steal the day's catch! This happened three times. Dan Medina got this photo of the owl coming in from the left.

Hi Carol,
Re your Comments about the honeybees -

Indeed it is amazing. I wonder. What if, all over the country, we took up the story of the honeybees (an easy to understand story) as a national learning opportunity, as something that we do together, if we were able to have a countrywide conversation! What if a peer-appointed "national science educator" could lead us on such learning experiences several times a year? Over 5 -10 years, how our collective understanding of our place in nature would shift - or so it seems to me. Think of all the retired scientists and teachers who would gladly volunteer to facilitate local presentations and mini-studies!
Note: I'm not sure-footed on social networking sites! I left this same message on my blog page. Wasn't sure if you would get it there....

I would have loved to gone to the meeting. I've been watching HAWK since the group started and have been waiting until I have time, which looks like it will be soon to get more involved. I would like to start working on certifying the backyard as a wildlife habitat and believe much of what is needed is in place. Any ideas to help? I've downloaded the app package. Most of the tip areas are aleady in place though at times the creek is dry. Does the yard get verified?

Hi Carol!

Thanks for the welcome. I hope your meeting went well last night. I live in Charlotte & that drive to Matthews is a little bit much for my ol' car. I will definitely contact Tim to let him know I'am available & at your service. Speaking of distance..Am I on the right network? I won't be much of any help if I can't drive so far! By the way, Kudos on the crow posting! I loved it!! Silly story but, a while back I was explaining to my firend who is Native American that I always felt crows following me. I felt connected to them & there was one crow in particular that I could even hand feed. She told me that the crow was my totem animal. I'am so facinated by them & again thanks for posting that article!

Thanks Carol! I made the blog post as you described, even found a free download photo of a monarch at http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/
Now everyone can read about that great discovery of how monarchs find their way across such long distances.

Hi Carol,
Yes, I would like to post the monarch story! Could you give me a pointer or two on how to do it? Habitat Stewards vs NC Wildlife? Which tab? Thanks very much! (They say "there are no dumb questions"... but I do feel a bit behind the times!) By the way, I also found an interesting discovery that butterflies remember what they learned as caterpillars, so I'll post it too.

At the present time...mostly sharks teeth and belemites and few other items, eaily found @ ECU in Greenville. In a creek called Green mill run. I've kayaked the flat river in Granville county and several places at the shore including Bear island. There is a site that was supposed to have been a village of giant native americans, i wanted o look for artifacts there but I had turn back because of weather. Namaste Michael

Great, Let me know, there are lots of flat water places to go, there are blackwater creeks, tidal creeks, tidal basins with great islands to explore, wide flowing rivers. You name it :)
