A Three-fer

A short Down and Dirty tip on how to make your freezer more efficient, save energy and plan for natural disasters….all by doing one simple thing. And as we enter hurricane and tornado season, I think this tip is pretty timely as well.

Water!

After a long dry spell (pun intended), we’re back with a video about water. Of the four elements of a wildlife habitat: Food, water, shelter and places to raise young, I think water is the most important. EVERYTHING needs water and being creative in providing water for wildlife can lead to hours [...]

Pheno-What?

You probably know about The Feederwatch Program at Cornell, right? Its a program that allows birders of all skills levels—beginners, experts and everyone in between–become Citizen Scientists by recording their bird sightings around the country to help scientists track population levels, spread of diseases, etc. As a birder, its a great tool for [...]

Birdhouse Donation

The Venture Crew in Matthews made and donated 36 bird houses to HAWK this weekend. There's going to be a write up in the Charlotte Observer this Sunday, 7/6, about the project, but I thought I would share a few of the pictures with everyone.

We plan to put up the houses in a variety… Continue

Fishing for Owls?

Two Matthews kids were fishing at Squirrel Lake Wildlife Habitat in Matthews when a barred owl who lives in the park decided to steal the day's catch! This happened three times. Dan Medina got this photo of the owl coming in from the left.

I'm so glad you and Jay made it to the cookout and paddle on Friday. This event gets better every year. Come on out and paddle with us again in August. We'll be in the Neck Road put in area, which will be a completely different experience, with bigger water to see the moon reflection.

In a podcast put out by the USGS, I heard about this organization. Phenology sounds right up this group's alley. Have you heard about it?

P.S., I suspect that is a "Lunch and Learn", for which they can charge a fee. Again, their focus is on money-MAKING.

Carol, I have no idea. It seems to me that the Levine Center is, as I think you learned years ago when they first started, seems solely interested in what can make money for them. I was very frustrated that they overall were less interested in a simple habitat (what could be easier?) than "spiffing up" the place, which to me of course are mutually INCLUSIVE, but I couldn't seem to get that into their heads.

MEANWHILE, my husband retired from 25 years at Duke Energy (and MANY other companies before it, Duke being the final "owner of them all") on May 31, and as of June 1 he is working for GAI Consultants, opening a brand new office in Charlotte (GAI is all over the NE and SE US, doing good work for 50+ years on environmentally favorable power plant and gas line siting, sustainability and environmental issues, and public education. He'll be traveling around the SE mostly by car for the next several months, and I will be going along much of the time (or else I'll never see him!). I know I'll learn a LOT, and I hope to share what I learn!

Awesome! I would be thrilled if you would allow my bf and I to stay with you! We don't have dogs of our own currently, but we love ALL furry friends! Could we exchange information to work out the details?

Hi Carol! I saw your comment on the Matthews event and I am wondering if you might still have a room available? My bf and I were considering camping to save the cost of a hotel room. Let me know!

Thanks,
Jessica

Hey, Mice, moles, and voles are cute too. I was cleaning my Dad's gutters on Tuesday and grabbed a King Snake that was larger than the one in the photo. Of course, I did not hang on very long, like a mili-second, before I realized that it wasn't the same gooie mess that I had been handling! I skipped that section for a few hours till she moved on. I have an idea for HAWK and I'll call you about it. Dave

Most of the people in the paddlers group are also in my yahoo list but thanks for the reminder. I'll send that group an invite even if some of it is duplicate.
