Mountain WILD! is continuing to work with St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Asheville. We have been working with their F.A.I.T.H. team on creating a butterfly-hummingbird garden and removal of invasive species along the Ross Creek corridor. On Saturday, 10/10, from 10:00 am - 11:30 am, we will work with church members - children and families - to plant the garden. Mountain WILD! members are invited to join us for the planting. If you would like to help with invasive species removal, please contact me. They have bumper crops of kudzu, multiflora roses, Japanese honeysuckle, Tree of Heaven, and Oriental bittersweet.

We can add you to our E-newsletter list which goes out each month before our meeting. We give information about our meetings, upcoming and ongoing projects, related meetings and events, etc. You can also check the Mountain WILD! website (www.mountainwild.org) or the NCWF ning site. Our meetings normally are held the 4th Tuesday of the month, 7:00 pm at the WNC Nature Center in Asheville. Let me know if you'd like us to add you to our listserve for E-newsletters and wildlife action alerts. We're looking forward to meeting you, too.

We had a great monthly meeting last night. Gary Peeples, a public affairs specialist for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Asheville Field Office, presented information about the Service and the rate habitats, plant and animal species found in the Southern Appalachians. Visit their website to learn what you can do to help protect these areas and organisms.

What a spectacular experience building 72 nesting boxes for endangered Carolina Northern Flying Squirrels! Nine of us pounded nails, cut screening material for the box bottoms, and piled the boxes higher and higher during our workday on 2/28 at the WNC Nature Center. It'd be great to see one soaring into its new home!

I'm looking forward to meeting some of you at the Nature Center for the box building. Should I bring a hammer?

I just wanted to thank Steve Schmeiser for visiting Congressman Heath Shuler with Chris North and myself last week. Steve blew the Congressman away when he told about local wildlife initiatives, Chris (NCWF Special Projects Director) made citizen wildlife habitat enhancement real for the Congressman when he told about green salamander and Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel initiatives in Western NC. I had the opportunity to speak to the need to develop a green energy policy that will put us on the road to mitigating climate change, create jobs in America, reduce the need to import foreign oil, and reduce the damage to wildlife havitat by eliminating our need to extract carbon products. I recommended he support the Climate Security Act with a Cap and Trade provision that could fund the type habitat restoration Steve and Chris spoke too. It was a great visit. Thanks Steve for being an articulate spokes person for your chapter. Thanks for giving wildlife a voice.
Cheers,
G. Richard Mode
