NC Wildlife Federation Networking Site

To advocate the conservation and enhancement of all wildlife and its habitat.

I'm sure you have guessed but let's continue the quiz just for fun.
540 million of these antiques are printed annually. That's about 2 for every man, woman and child in the U.S
They use 1.6 billion pounds of paper.
It takes 7.2 million barrels of oil and ; 19 million trees; and 3.2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity to produce that much paper.
The number that don't get recycled take up 268,000 cubic yards of landfill space.
Wow- something that takes up that much of our resources must be fantastically useful don't you think?
Think again because I'm talking about the Yellow Pages industry in all of its various shapes and disguises. And they are dumped in your driveway every year whether you want them or not.
A couple of organizations are trying to convince the industry to allow people to opt out, much like the "No Call" program for telemarketing. You can visit their sites and sign the petitions at http:www.paperlesspetition.org , and http:www.yellowpagesgoesgreen.org
Let's help this industry into the 21st century and help the planet as well.

Thanks, Frank for providing this information and for brining it up at our meeting this week. This is something that most of us should do. I can't remember the last time we used our phone books, although I do enjoy ripping them in two with my bare hands when the new one arrives.

I copied and pasted Frank's article from the site and sent it to all my friends , I then printed it and hung it up at work and practically forced everyone to do it. This could be the most exciting accomplishment for 2009 if we could do away with automatic driveway drops. Thanks Frank - your my hero.
